Let’s start by talking about nostalgia.
Nostalgia is behind so much of what we do whether we realize it or not. A subconscious hook drawing us to objects and experiences that we are familiar with rather than running out into the great scary wilderness full of new adventures. It is the force behind the constant deluge of movie remakes of existing IP so that viewers can think “hey I know that!” and join the club.
Nostalgia is why this automobile this will trigger something within you. Maybe it’s the friends you had when you first saw the films or every single delightfully naive aspect of childhood during that the time in your life that pop culture icons such as this started showing up in your middle school sketchbooks.
Today we will be discussing the rebrand of DeLorean Motor Company.
There’s a significant issue with rebranding any car company: cars are still being produced, clogging cities, and destroying the planet. Automobile culture is toxic and we are all surely doomed without continued education of the public on what steps can (read: must) be taken in order to improve the lives of everyone living on earth.
Alternate forms of transportation are a fundamental component of solving this.
What if we could both provide a way to combat climate change and connect to our sense of childhood freedom with the reliable hooks of nostalgia.
De Lorean will be relaunching as 88bikes.
Company branding consists of a bright throwback gradient with a variety of modern tech blue accent colors.
Social feed is bright and has a mix of UGC as well as brand photography showing the ease of use of the product.
Vote stickers are hardcoded into the ad asset so when a user touches the screen and swipes to vote it activates the CTA.
I had the idea to combine these two products to make a special edition 88bikes flaming wheelie machine to pair with whenever the next anniversary of BTTF will be.
Instead we will run a campaign around a custom 88bikes giphy integration so fans of the company and potential users can add the flare to their photos and videos.
Whenever applicable I often try to use a project to teach myself something new. Sometimes it’s via research, modification to an established process to make my workflow more efficient, or a brand new technique. With the 88bikes brief I was able to learn how to create particle cannons in After Effects and the best practices for rendering files with an alpha channel that can apply across multiple platforms.
This rebrand of DMC was first presented to Facebook Creative Shop and has has been modified from its original version. It has been formatted to fit this screen and edited for content
